Notre Dame Study Indicates Links between Catholic School Closures and Increase In Chicago Crime

Mirrors of Justice has a good link to a Notre Dame study that looks at the effects of a closure of a Catholic Schools in Chicago as to communities espcially in the inner city. The indications are from this study that disorder increases , social cohesion increases , and eventually crime increases.

See Crime, Chicago, and Catholic Schools

Of course one suspects this can be duplicated in many places around the country. This brings up the issue of what is the role of the Church in this siutation , and what is the role of state in perhaps helping facilatate an atmosphere where this might not happen such as vouchers, etc. I would also add the privatae sector can play a much needed role in the form of opportunity scholarships and the such.
